Editorial Policy
1. Mission and Editorial Independence
Harbinger Standard (Insight Africa) is an independent digital publication providing authoritative, balanced, and accurate coverage of news and current affairs across the African continent. Our mission is to provide English-language reporting on Africa that meets international journalistic standards and serves readers worldwide who seek to understand African affairs.
All editorial decisions are made solely on journalistic grounds. No commercial, political, governmental, or external ownership interest influences our reporting, story selection, or editorial framing.
2. Professional Standards
We adhere to the SPJ Code of Ethics, the IFJ Declaration of Principles on the Conduct of Journalists (1954, revised 2019), and the standards of the African Journalists' Association and the African Freedom of Information Centre (AFIC) where applicable. We further draw on the guidelines of Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and the CPJ regarding press freedom and journalist safety in Africa.
3. Accuracy and Verification
All material facts are independently verified before publication. Given the diversity of media environments across Africa's 54 countries, we apply tiered verification standards:
- Reporting based on independent, free media sources receives standard verification (dual-source confirmation).
- Reporting that necessarily relies on state-controlled media in countries with restricted press freedom is clearly attributed and contextualised. We note limitations in source independence.
- Data and statistics are verified against official national statistical agency publications, African Union data, and recognised international sources (World Bank, IMF, UNDP, African Development Bank).
4. Africa Focus and Regional Standards
Harbinger Standard covers the entirety of Africa, including North Africa, West Africa, East Africa, Central Africa, and Southern Africa. We apply the following region-specific editorial standards:
- Political reporting: We distinguish between government statements, opposition views, civil society perspectives, and independent expert analysis. We do not advocate for any government or political faction.
- Conflict reporting: Coverage of armed conflicts follows ICRC guidelines. We do not publish information that could endanger civilians, humanitarian workers, or journalists in conflict zones. Reporting from conflict areas is clearly attributed and any limitations on independent verification are disclosed.
- Economic reporting: Given Africa's economic diversity, economic data is sourced from national central banks, ministries of finance, African Development Bank, and internationally recognised statistical bodies. We contextualise data within each country's specific economic conditions.
- Human rights: Human rights reporting draws on reports from Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights, and the UN Human Rights Council, complemented by local civil society documentation.
- Humanitarian crises: Coverage of humanitarian situations follows UN OCHA guidelines for responsible reporting and avoids sensationalism while maintaining factual rigour.
5. Impartiality
Harbinger Standard takes no institutional positions on contested political, territorial, or sovereignty questions in Africa. We present evidence-based reporting and credible expert analysis. We are committed to giving voice to African perspectives and to avoiding the replication of historically colonialist or externally imposed narratives.
6. Diversity and Representation
We are committed to sourcing from a diverse range of African voices, including women, youth, civil society actors, and communities in rural and underserved areas. Our coverage does not reduce Africa to a monolithic entity but reflects its extraordinary diversity of cultures, languages, religions, political systems, and economic conditions.
7. Source Protection
The protection of confidential sources is a fundamental journalistic obligation and is particularly critical in reporting from African countries where sources may face severe consequences for speaking to international media. We use encrypted communication, do not retain unnecessary identifying metadata, and will not disclose source identities. We apply the highest operational security standards for source protection.
8. Corrections Policy
Errors are corrected promptly with a clearly marked correction notice. Retractions are issued where fundamentally flawed stories cannot be corrected. Report errors to support@harbingerpressmedia.com.
9. AI and Automated Tools
AI tools may assist in research, translation (particularly from French, Portuguese, Arabic, Swahili, and other African languages), and drafting. All AI-assisted content is reviewed and approved by a human journalist before publication.
