Kenya's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has signalled firm support for the Global Initiative to Galvanise Political Commitment to International Humanitarian Law (IHL), following a joint démarche delivered to Amb. Njambi Kinyungu, Deputy Director General for Multilateral Affairs, by representatives of the initiative's six founding states and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
The delegation — led by H.E. Ms. Rulan Samara, Ambassador of Jordan — brought together representatives of Brazil, China, France, Jordan, Kazakhstan and South Africa to underscore the importance of Kenya's participation in the High-Level Conference on Humanity in War, set for 7 December 2026 in Amman, Jordan. Kenya welcomed the forthcoming conference and expressed the hope that its Political Declaration would translate renewed political commitment into concrete and practical recommendations, strengthening the capacity of states and other actors to uphold and implement IHL.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kenya commended the six founding states for spearheading the initiative at what it described as a critical juncture, as respect for IHL and the protection of civilians face growing challenges. Nairobi reaffirmed its commitment to contributing to the conference and to supporting the effective implementation of its outcomes.
The meeting also highlighted Kenya's existing role within the Global IHL Initiative: the country serves as co-chair of the Prevention Good Practices Workstream alongside Australia, Austria and the United Arab Emirates — an engagement the ministry characterised as active.
